Recently, at the 21st International Conference on Experimental Mechanics held in Bologna, Italy, Professor Xiong Jian from HIT School of Astronautics was successfully elected as a Council Member of the European Society for Experimental Mechanics (EuraSEM). He is the first scholar from our university’s mechanics discipline to hold this position and currently the only mainland Chinese scholar serving on the council.

The European Society for Experimental Mechanics (EuraSEM) originated from the European Association for Experimental Mechanics established in 1959 and was officially restructured and renamed in 2008. Experimental mechanics, as a vital component of solid mechanics, plays a key role throughout the lifecycle of materials or structures. EuraSEM is dedicated to organizing high-level forums that bring together top scholars from around the world for academic exchanges and discussions on new developments in the field of experimental mechanics. The EuraSEM Council consists of 21 members authorized to implement the decisions of the General Assembly (GA) and oversee the activities of all society committees. Following his election, Professor Xiong Jian will participate in formulating development strategies, organizing international conferences, and promoting academic exchanges to foster deeper collaboration between China and Europe in experimental mechanics.

Xiong Jian, recipient of the national-level award for young talented scholars, has long been engaged in research on the lightweight design theory and mechanical properties of advanced composite structures. He has developed a high-strength mechanical theory for carbon fiber composite sandwich structures, overcoming a series of key scientific and technical challenges in their design. He has led over 20 projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, published more than 120 SCI papers, and obtained 18 national invention patents as the first inventor. A project he led won the First Prize of the Heilongjiang Provincial Technology Invention Award. He has delivered plenary and invited speeches or chaired sessions at over 40 important domestic and international academic conferences. He serves as an editorial board member for several prominent academic journals and has received awards such as the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation Youth Science Award, the Heilongjiang Provincial Youth Science and Technology Award, and the Heilongjiang Provincial May Fourth Youth Medal. He was also selected as an Elsevier 2024 Highly Cited Chinese Researcher and included in the 2024 “Nation-Building Young Scientists” Future Leaders Program, receiving coverage from the Communist Youth League Central Committee.
