Lecture by Professor Stephen W. Tsai, Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Held at SOA

On the afternoon of October 16, a lecture by Professor Stephen W. Tsai, member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and Emeritus Professor at Stanford University, was held in Lecture Hall 227 of the University Activity Center. The event was organized by the Institute of Composite Materials and Structures and the International Center for Applied Mechanics of SOA, at the invitation of Academician Shanyi Du. Professor Tsai delivered a keynote lecture introducing the Double-Double Theory, a newly proposed approach that significantly simplifies the design of composite laminates. In his presentation, he discussed the theory’s distinctive advantages from the perspectives of theoretical simplification, experimental validation, and manufacturing feasibility. Nearly 600 faculty members and students attended the event both online and in person. The lecture was chaired by Professor Jinsong Leng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dean of HIT School of Future Technology / School of Outstanding Engineers.

The lecture and the following discussions are centered around the rapid and efficient analysis and design of composite laminates. Other topics such as the applicability of the simplified theory to various material systems, the rationale behind proposing invariants, and the current status and future prospects of the theory in engineering practice were also addressed. Professor Tsai also provided insightful suggestions for the interdisciplinary integration of materials science and mechanics. In their engaging exchanges with Professor Tsai, participating faculty and students bore down on understanding key mechanics issues in laminate analysis and application. The event infused new momentum into the development of the disciplines of composite materials and mechanics, clarified future research directions, and laid a solid foundation for better serving national strategic needs.

Following the lecture, Academician Shanyi Du delivered concluding remarks, extending a warm welcome to Professor Tsai and expressing sincere appreciation for his visit. He highlighted Professor Tsai’s pioneering contributions to the field of composite mechanics and his profound influence on the international composite research community. On behalf of Harbin Institute of Technology, Academician Du presented Professor Tsai with the university’s Centennial Anniversary Commemorative Album as a token of respect and friendship.
