On May 28, ahead of the 10th National Science and Technology Workers’ Day, Heilongjiang Province held its official 2026 National Science and Technology Workers’ Day celebration and the award ceremony for the province’s “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Workers.” Professor Duan Guangren of SOA was honored with the title of Heilongjiang Province’s “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker.”
Profile of the Awardee

Professor Duan Guangren, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has devoted his career to research in control theory and spacecraft control. He secured the first Basic Science Center project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China to be awarded in Northeast China, received two National Natural Science Awards and the first-ever Grand Prize of the Heilongjiang Provincial Natural Science Award, and saw his research recognized among the Top Ten Advances in Science and Technology at Chinese Universities. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), the Chinese Association of Automation (CAA), and other leading professional societies. He founded the Technical Committee on Fully Actuated System Approach of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (IEEE SMC) and served as its inaugural Chair. The annual international conference he established, Conference on Fully Actuated System Theory and Applications, has grown into a major international event attracting more than 1,000 participants. In the 2025 World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking, he was ranked first worldwide in the field of Industrial Applications and Automation.
The award is part of the 2026 “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker” recognition program jointly organized by five provincial organizations, including the Publicity Department of the CPC Heilongjiang Provincial Committee, the Heilongjiang Association for Science and Technology, the Heilongjiang Department of Science and Technology, the Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences, and the Provincial Office for Military-Civilian Integration Development. The program aims to recognize outstanding science and technology professionals, encourage continued innovation and dedication, showcase exemplary researchers as role models, and support China’s drive for scientific and technological advancement. This year’s program selected ten outstanding science and technology professionals to receive the title of Heilongjiang Province’s “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker.”
