From June 15 to 17, the eLight Workshop in Harbin, organized by the Light Academic Publishing Center, including its flagship journals eLight and Light: Science & Applications, and co-initiated by HIT SOA, was held at Baihua Island Hotel in Harbin. Professor Dong Yongkang of HIT SOA, Director of the Light Harbin Office, served as Chair. More than 20 leading researchers from 11 countries—China, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt—joined outstanding master’s and doctoral students selected through the International Summer School from nearly 10 countries to discuss the latest advances and emerging trends in optics and photonics.

The workshop opened with welcome remarks by Bai Yuhong, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) and Executive Editor of Light: Science & Applications, and Li Longqiu, Director of the HIT Journal Center and a nationally recognized leading scholar. The opening ceremony was chaired by Guo Chenzi, Deputy Director of the CIOMP Light Academic Publishing Center and Managing Editor of eLight. Bai Yuhong and Li Longqiu welcomed participants from around the world, reviewed the recent development of the Light journal family, and expressed their hope that, by building on HIT’s strengths in optical engineering and its portfolio of internationally recognized multidisciplinary journals, the workshop would provide a premier forum for academic exchange, strengthen international research collaboration, and advance the continued development of the field.

The technical sessions were chaired by Professor Hervé Maillotte of the FEMTO-ST Institute (France), Professor Diaa Khalil of Ain Shams University, Professor Ma Yufei of HIT SOA, and Assistant Professor Wan Yating of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.

Among the featured speakers were Alexander Shkurinov, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University; Xi-Cheng Zhang, Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Professor at the University of Rochester; Fernando Stefani, Member of the Argentine National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and Professor at the University of Buenos Aires; Costantino De Angelis, Vice Rector and Professor at the University of Brescia; Emiliano Descrovi, President of the European Optical Society and Professor at the Politecnico di Torino; Paul Urbach, former President of the European Optical Society and Professor at the Delft University of Technology; Tawfique Hasan of the University of Cambridge; Wolfgang Freude of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology; Tarik Bourouina of ESIEE Paris; Jin Z. Zhang of the University of California, Santa Cruz; Ifor Samuel of the University of St Andrews; Harald Schneider of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf; Boris Mizaikoff of the Ulm University; and Professor Ma Yufei of HIT SOA. They delivered invited presentations on cutting-edge topics including ultrafast optics, nanophotonics, photodetection, and AI-enabled materials science, followed by lively discussions with participants.

The eLight Workshop in Harbin provided an outstanding forum for leading scholars and promising early-career researchers from around the world to exchange ideas in optics and photonics. Through stimulating scientific discussions and intellectual collaboration, the event inspired young researchers to pursue innovative research and explore new frontiers in the field.
